A « resistant » in his art foundry
Detailed biographical portrait signed Natacha Sikias, photographed by Michel Sayegh. Born in Beirut in 1944, Berberi was marked by sculpture from the age of fourteen. After a year of study at ALBA, he obtained a scholarship and joined the studio of the sculptor Youssef Ghossoub, before leaving to specialise at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris (ENSBA), where he won the First Prize for Foreign Sculpture in 1964. Back in Lebanon in 1967, he set up an art foundry in Dbayeh. In 1970, he won the Rotary sculpture prize for a statue of Queen Elissa, cast in Carthage. A professor of architecture and decoration at the Lebanese University since 1972, he confides that his own children chose medicine rather than taking over his studio.
